交流内容简介：This study examines the impact of environmental legislation on firm financial misconduct. Based on a quasi-natural experiment involving the establishment of environmental courts in China, we find a robust positive correlation between the creation of environmental courts and the likelihood of financial misconduct among listed firms within their jurisdiction. Furthermore, mechanism analysis reveals that this relationship occurs through resource crowding-out effects, higher operating costs, and investor distraction. Cross-sectional tests show that this effect is more pronounced for firms with higher pollution levels, greater managerial performance pressure, and those located in cities with stricter environmental oversight. Overall, this paper sheds light on the impact of environmental legislation on firm financial compliance, providing valuable insights into harmonizing environmental accountability with firm financial decision-making.
